Lake
Moogerah, formed by Moogerah Dam,
is a water supply and irrigation
dam on Reynold's Creek, a tributary
of the Bremer River in Southeast
Queensland's Fassifern Valley.
The lake is used for recreation,
fishing and camping. Water Skiing
has not been suspended due to
extremely good water levels.
The
lake is located around 60 km southwest
of Ipswich, and about 90 minutes
drive from Brisbane. Boonah is
the nearest town, about 15km from
the lake.
Construction
on the dam began in 1959, although
land for the project was resumed
as early as 1916.
Moogerah
Dam was completed in 1961 as the
central catchment of the Warrill
Valley Water Supply Scheme. The
dam wall at Lake Moogerah allows
access to Mt Edwards in Moogerah
Peaks National Park
Constructed
in 1964, Borumba Dam (Lake Borumba)
has been one of Queensland's most
established lakes. Built across
Yabba Creek, (a tributary of the
Mary River) the lake has a surface
area of 500 hectares at an average
depth of 6.6 meters. This is utilised
primarily for irrigation purposes
and flood mitigation. Raising
of Borumba Dam by about 2.5 metres
was carried out in 1997.
There
is considerable local opposition
to the proposal near Borumba Dam,
with all Mary Valley and Sunshine
Coast Shire Councils in opposition
to the dam proposal on a variety
of grounds including: the dislocation
of the local community in the
inundated area; adverse effects
on downstream communities; and,
environmental impacts such as
removing one of the few remaining
habitats for the vulnerable Queensland
Lungfish.
