Developed
by the Center
for Environmental Law & Policy
at Yale University
and the Center
for International Earth Science
Information Networks
(CIESIN) at Columbia University,
the Pilot 2007 Environmental Performance
Index, was released in January
2007 in Davos, Switzerland.
The Pilot 2007 EPI represents
a “work in progress” meant to
stimulate debate on appropriate
metrics and methodologies for
tracking environmental performance,
enable analysis of the determinants
of environmental success, and
highlight the need for increased
investment in environmental indicators
and data. The Pilot 2007 EPI includes
133 countries based on data availability.

CSD
WAND, a web-based tool to disseminate
information on implementation
and best practices
May
9, 2007
In
order to implement the CSD's decision
and to provide a growing resource
to those working on water and
sanitation issues, the UN Department
of Economic and Social Affairs
(DESA) is developing the CSD Water
Action and Networking Database
(CSD WAND). CSD WAND is, thus,
a web-based tool for advancing
implementation of actions that
support achievement of the internationally
agreed goals related to water
and sanitation. The objective of
this toolbox is to provide a platform
for:
· Exchanging
best practices, lessons learned,
and case studies;
· On-line expert-to-expert discussions,
and;
· Searching international agreements
on water and sanitation to support
the identification of guidelines,
commitments, and/or policy recommendations
that might apply to your work.

Monitoring
sessions at the 4th
World Water Forum
April
14, 2007
The
sessions “Monitoring and targeting
drinking water supply and sanitation”
and “Country Road Maps towards
the MDGs” were very successful
in Mexico! These sessions, involving
several organizations such as
WHO, UNICEF, WSP, the French Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and the World
Water Council, indeed attracted
a great number of participants,
with standing room only. The presentations
were mainly related to local actions
and international monitoring initiatives
like the Joint
Monitoring Programme
(JMP).
During the discussions, experts
and participants stressed the
importance of monitoring as a
tool for governance and development.
They also pointed out the need
for developing and establishing
monitoring systems for better
water management and to trigger
progress in achieving MDGs for
Water Supply and Sanitation. For
this, increased support must be
given to local and national stakeholders
in terms of raising awareness,
capacity building and financing.
The final report on this mega-session
on monitoring, currently in progress,
will be available very soon on
our site.
Several other sessions, especially
those on Day 5 of the Forum, also
discussed monitoring and stressed
its importance in other sectors
like risk management, environmental
protection, public health, economy,
etc.
In addition, the World Water Council
also produced and distributed
a booklet (in English) during
the Forum on our "Water Monitoring
Alliance." It is now available
on the WMA website.
The French and Spanish versions
of the booklet will be available
soon.
Wetlands
satellite mapping scheme yielding
first results
October
10, 2005
The
Globwetland project, launched
in 2003 by Environmental Space
Agency (ESA), has now entered
the next step with prototype products.
The aim of the project is to develop
the information service for global
wetlands based on Earth Observation
using satellite imagery for conservation
efforts. The products, which are
based on specific requests of
local and national users across
50 sites in 21 countries from
4 continents, include base maps,
land use and land cover maps,
and change detection maps.
